The aim of the Skerries Cycling Initiative (SCI) is to promote all aspects of cycling in Skerries, including commuting, travelling to school/shops, recreation and sport.
The objectives of Skerries Cycling Iniative are as follows;
-
Cycling Network for Skerries : the SCI will lobby for the implementation by Fingal County Council (FCC) of the recommendations made by consultants Sustrans/CBuchanan (Malahide-Skerries Cycling Study 2009) for the development of a cycling network in Skerries and the development of cycling infrastructure in the region.
Cycling Network for Fingal : the SCI will lobby for the development of a cycling network on prioritised roads throughout Fingal, with modifications as recommended by the National Cycling Policy Framework (NCPF).
-
Implementation of those elements of the NCPF which are the responsibility of local authorities e.g. provision of cycle parking, junction modification to improve cycling safety.
Training school children : the SCI will pursue this goal with Fingal County Council's cycling skills co-ordinator.
-
Group Cycling Events : the SCI will promote cycle rides on the routes characterised by Hugh Halpin (who is the SCI secretary) in By Bike From Skerries which is on sale in the Skerries Bookshop.
-
Coast & Castle Cycleway : the SCI has developed a plan for a cycleway from Balbriggan to Sutton, incorporating links to major parks and heritage sites. This has been accepted in principle by Fingal County Council and we look forward to working with them to bring this "Great Eastern Greenway" into existence.
