In
April 1987 Skerries Tourism was inaugurated for the purpose of
promoting tourism in Skerries and surrounding area.
Some
of the first projects that the committee tackled was to get a
Board Failte approved Information Point opened in the Community
Centre and to get bed and breakfast houses in the area to join
Board Failte. Next was to get colourful promotional brochures
and information packs which the group had printed, all to go towards
making Skerries more visitor friendly. The brochures are available
at Dublin Tourist offices and various local outlets.
Skerries
Tourism also succeeded in obtaining more prominent sign posting
for the town. The group produced a video on Skerries, entitled
"The Hidden Jewel", which was extensively promoted and
distributed. Stenna Sea Link also took the video on board and
this was a great boast for the town. In 1994 a 'Shop Local Campaign'
was initiated by the committee and the group were also represented
at the Twinning of Skerries with the Canton of Guichen.
When
the Skerries Mills were opened to the public, the Tourist Office
was transferred to the reception area in the Mills Complex and
is still supplied with brochures and information of Skerries and
surrounding area by Skerries Tourism.
Skerries
Tourism would like to thank all the members for their support
through the years, for without it the 10.000 full colour brochures,
15.000 'Free Tourist Guide to Skerries' and numerous other promotional
campaigns would not take place as these are funded solely by membership
fees.
