Skerries,
situated on a rocky peninsula 25 kilometres north of our nation's
capital, is a beautiful place to live, work and visit. Here you
will find beautiful walks, wonderful wildlife and enjoy fabulous
views from the pristine coastline.
In
fact, when Percy French viewed the Mountains of Mourne sweeping
down to the sea, from his vantage point in Skerries, he was inspired
to write his famous melody.
Since
the 1970's the Skerries Tidy Towns Committee continue to be inspired
by the natural beauty of the town. The committee, made up entirely
of voluntary members, is very strongly committed to enhancing
and maintaining the town's character.
We
meet fortnightly from September to March. It's at these meetings
that plans are made, ideas are aired and administration is taken
care of.
From
the beginning of April to the end of August a flurry of activity
erupts, as the Tidy Towns Committee swing into action! Plants
are planted, streets and beaches are cleaned, the paintbrushes
come out, and the town is given a general spruce up!
"We
owe a huge debt of gratitude to the Tidy Towns Committee and their
volunteers", says Bob Laird, Chairman of the Skerries Community
Association.
"Their
vision, hard work and determination have helped to make our community
a better place to live. They give of their time generously and
wholeheartedly, and as residents of Skerries, we all benefit from
their efforts. We as townsfolk should try to support them in every
way possible", he added.
Indeed,
the Skerries Tidy Towns Committee have been winning ongoing awards
in the Tidy Towns Competition since 1994. These awards include;
- Best Large Town, Regional, County and Population Awards, Bronze,
Silver and Gold Medals, Heritage and Landscape Awards
In
fact, Skerries was the first town in Ireland to win Gold in the
prestigious International Entente Floral Competition. The criteria
for judging this international competition is similar to Tidy
Towns covering Heritage, Landscape, Horticulture, Natural Amenities,
and Community Involvement.
Skerries
also continue to win prizes in the local Fingal County Council
Tidy Districts Competition. These include: - Best Town, Best Main
Street, Best estates, Gardens and Shop Fronts.
September
and October are the months when we attend the various award ceremonies
and hope that our efforts will prove fruitful! We hold a social
evening in November for all our supporters and helpers, and the
Committee Members enjoy a social event in the autumn.
