Progress on Primary School Lobbying - Update 31/05/2007
Now that the election is over, Skerries Community Association will be arranging to meet the new TDs to pursue a solution to the imminent primary school crisis. It seems there are now three possibilities for a patron:
1. The CO DUBLIN VEC, as part of the pilot scheme to evaluate VECs as patrons of primary schools
2. Educate Together, should they secure the resources they have requested from the Department of Education
3. The Minister for Education him/herself, whom we hear is to become patron of a new "Model School" opening in Dublin 15.
In parallel with this, we will continue to work in parallel with Fingal County Council and officials from the Dept of Education and Science to expedite the acquisition of the site and to further plans for building the school.
Skerries Schools Crisis on TV News
Many of you will have seen the RTE TV News coverage of the Skerries Schools Crisis on Friday 18th May 2007. Although the clip ended with the journalist saying that Skerries will get their school, we do not know when. Nor did Minister Hanafin agree to lift her ban on the Co Dublin VEC becoming patron. She maintained that there is no crisis.
We will continue to use this pre-election opportunity to lobby politicians to commit to the delivery of this school. We ask you to do the same. Otherwise we will have a shortfall of at least 80 junior infants places by September 2008.
