St Patrick’s Day Parade 2006 – The debut of the Skerries FBD Rás Float! With the arctic conditions that prevailed, our own ‘March of the Penguins’ was expected in Skerries but instead a great crowd lined Strand Street to watch the parade. Elaborate floats of all descriptions made their way down the street. Well done to the organisers: The Skerries Chamber of Commerce. The SCA was involved in helping with preparations for the Skerries FBD RAS float. Three blast frozen, lycra clad, competitive cyclists braved the elements and dished out goodies in the form of lollies, keyrings and pencils
(No, the white pencils weren’t cigarettes as some people thought!)The float was followed by an entourage of family cyclists with different types of child seats which showed the more relaxed side of cycling.
The purpose of the float was to raise awareness of the FBD Rás International Cycle Race which finishes in Skerries after eight gruelling days. On the final day alone, the riders will have cycled 150km before they get to Skerries. A series of cycling-based events will be held around the town in the run up to and on the day itself.
Our aim is to make the area more cycling friendly and get more people on their bikes.
Our thanks to McNally Joinery, Lusk who provided us with a truck and a driver and to Gerry’s Supermarket for the signs.
It is hoped that Skerries will be chosen for the end stage of the prestigious FBD Ras for many years to come. For more information click here.Don’t waste time any more time reading this- click here for the pictures!
