The Skerries Green Schools Project

This project was initiated by the Skerries Development and Community Association (SDCA) in April of 2003. The objectives of the project are to:

Improve the beauty and cleanliness of the town
Foster a greater sense of responsibility for and pride in their environment on the part of young citizens of the town
Encourage other citizens to adopt and practise these values from the example of our young people

As of Sept 2005, Skerries Schools participating in the programme are:

St Patrick's Junior
St Patrick's Senior
Milverton NS
Scoil Réalt na Mara
Holmpatrick NS (Received Green Flag in Spring 2004)

We are delighted to welcome Skerries Community College who are going to introduce the programme there this term. We are also fortunate to have St Brendan's NS, Loughshinny as a member of our Green Schools network.

Thanks to €1500 funding from Fingal County Council via Local Agenda 21 Partnership, we have been able to support participating schools. This involves visiting schools and developing a green schools network in Skerries.

Last May we held an information morning for schools at Skerries Mills and organised an exhibition of all the work done by each school on the programme. Crann Phádraig supported our efforts by helping out both practically and financially. This year we hope to publish a newsletter, hold a briefing to help schools fill in their application for the Green Flag, provide support visits and hold a spring time event. We will be applying for more Local Agenda 21 funding too. We hope to have some web pages showing photos and giving details of each schools efforts.

Our new SCA Green Schools Coordinator is Niamh Quigley, contact her on nqfint@o2.ie or on 01 849 6748.  A huge thank you to Liz Thompson our outgoing coordinator for all her hard work and boundless enthusiasm over the past year.

Holmpatrick National School are awarded their renewed Green Flag for Energy Awareness
