The
dream of a Community Centre dates back to 1977 when a Committee
was formed to investigate and research the need for community
facilities in Skerries. The building of a Community Centre would
be the focal point for the community and would provide leisure,
recreational and sporting opportunities for the greater Skerries
area.
In
1980 a fundraising campaign commenced to raise £54,000 in
three months to enable the committee to avail of a government
grant. The community was asked to contribute £100 per household,
without promising any form of membership on the opening of the
Centre. The dream became reality on the 11th of December 1982
when Skerries Community Centre was officially opened by Ron Delaney.
