Skerries Cycling Initiative Meets Dept. of Transport Officials on Implementation of National Cycling Policy

On November 20th 2009, the Skerries Cycling Initiative (SCI) joined with cycling campaign representatives from Limerick and Galway to represent cyclist.ie, the national cycling campaign umberella body, at a meeting with David Fadden and Ronnie Devlin of the Dept. of Transport (DoT).
The subject of this first meeting of cyclist.ie with DoT officials was to discuss progress on the implementation by the DoT of the new National Cycling Policy Framework (see http://www.transport.ie/upload/general/11387-0.pdf). Basically the outcome of the meeting was that the DoT staff demonstrated that they were genuinely engaged in the long process of transforming the cycling landscape of Ireland.  This involves legislative change e.g. we expect imminent removal of Statutory Instrument 274 which compels cyclists to use poor quality or dangerous cycle paths, plus wide ranging infrastructural change.  Fingal County Council is also seeking funds from the DoT to develop cycling in Skerries. More detail can be obtained from Ray Ryan, Chairperson of the SCI (rayryan99@gmail.com) and directly from Council staff (www.fingalcoco.ie).
