The new Programme for Government which was agreed on October 10th has a commitment which is actually one of the SCI's major goals. Here it is ! :
· "We will develop a Bray to Balbriggan cycle and pedestrian route, and other similar routes such as Oranmore to Barna, as major tourism and commuter facilities."
The Bray to Balbriggan cycle route has been at the top of our agenda since our foundation in October 2007. It will mean safer cycling between Skerries and Balbriggan and also Skerries south to Rush and beyond. This will be extremely important for commuters who would like to cycle to work in Balbriggan, Rush and further south and also for schoolchildren travelling in all directions along the coastline. The route will also be an obvious winner for tourism in Skerries and the region.
The policy also states :
"We will vigorously pursue the delivery of the Government’s “Smarter Travel – A Sustainable Transport Future” and the recently published “Cycle Framework Policy” document.
We will ensure that Public Service Obligation payments to Irish Rail, Dublin Bus and Bus Éireann, are consistent with the policy in “Smarter Travel – A Sustainable Transport Future”.
The National Cycling Policy Framework encapsulates many of the goals of cycling campaigns nationwide and, in particular, it adopts the Hierarchy of Provision philosophy as regards promoting cycling and safety on the roads. We are also pressing Iarnrod Eireann to allow bicycles to be carried in the rear carriage of trains during off-peak hours i.e. travelling south from Skerries from 10am, travelling North up to 4pm and after 7pm, and all day at weekends. This commitment in the programme strengthens our hand in these negotiations.
Now that we have these commitments, THE SKERRIES CYCLING INITIATIVE WILL WORK TO MAKE SURE THEY DELIVER !
All the best,
Ray Ryan, Chairperson, Skerries Cycling Initiative
