Written by SCI secretary Hugh Halpin, By Bike from Skerries describes five local cycling routes along with local history and folklore. The booklet can be purchased from Skerries Bookshop and Skerries Mills. Proceeds go to the Skerries Cycling Initiative.

In late 2007 the Skerries Cycling Initiative joined forces with cycling campaigns nationwide to produce a national cycling policy that would have the agreement of all. This exhausting and complex process took several months but was ultimately successful. The policy covers all key areas including an explanation of the critical importance of cycling development in Ireland today, philosophical background, recommendations for commuter and recreational cycling development, measures to increase cycling including fiscal measures and the vital ‘Hierarchy of Provision’, which explains to government and local authorities exactly what is needed to encourage cycling and promote safety. Read it and you will be surprised at what you find there ! It is 27 pages long, plus a comprehensive appendix.

Following the first meeting of the Skerries Cycling Initiative with Fingal County Council, we sent them, on their request, a briefing document which outlined Nine Projects on cycling (SCI Projects 1-9) which require the assistance of FCC. This document explains the projects with diagrams where appropriate. They include cycling routes to Ardgillan, Balbriggan, Rush, Lusk, cycling routes to Skerries Community College, promotion of cycle training plus how to make cycling safer in Fingal, Car Free Day, Adoption of Hugh Halpin’s “By Bike from Skerries” cycle routes.
